It's Here: A Bill for Fair Pay, Deactivation Protections, and Driver Benefits in Oregon

Drivers Union leaders with Sen. Kayse Jama after the bill's first hearing
Senate Bill 1166, a bill guaranteeing fair pay, benefits, and protections for rideshare drivers in Oregon was introduced to a state legislative committee on March 20. This is the first step toward passing a driver rights law, and drivers were there to testify before a senate committee on why we need a law like this in Oregon. You can watch the hearing here:
SB 1166 is being sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Kayse Jama, and it would set per-mile and per-minute minimum compensation for drivers, establish just cause protections against unwarranted termination so drivers don’t lose their job without warning or recourse, extend sick leave and other benefits to drivers, and establish a resource center to support the diverse community of rideshare workers in accessing benefits and enforcing our rights.
Things like this don’t happen unless we organize together and demand fairness. We have been meeting, talking, and even protesting in the streets to get lawmakers and those in power to listen. Now we’re at the next level.
The process of passing a bill can be long, and we know Uber and Lyft spend a lot of time and money trying to fight against bills like this. Whatever happens, drivers all over Oregon will need to speak up and be ready to take action together. And Drivers Union Oregon will be there every step of the way.
