From KOIN (CBS 6) in Portland: PORTLAND, Ore. – Oregon lawmakers are considering a rideshare driver rights bill, in an effort to improve working conditions for Uber and Lyft drivers across the state. On Thursday, the Senate Labor and Business Committee held an informational hearing on Senate Bill 1166, which received support from some rideshare drivers and Drivers Union Oregon — a union representing over 10,000 rideshare drivers in the state — while representatives from Uber and Lyft raised concerns about the legislation. If the bill passes, the protections for Oregon rideshare drivers will take effect in the summer of 2025.

Senate Bill 1166, a bill guaranteeing fair pay, benefits, and protections for rideshare drivers in Oregon was introduced to a state legislative committee on March 20. This is the first step toward passing a driver rights law, and drivers were there to testify before a senate committee on why we need a law like this in Oregon. You can watch the hearing here:

Over the past several years, riders have likely noticed the price of their rideshare trips steadily increasing. And it would be fair for them to imagine that this means the driver behind the wheel is seeing a corresponding increase in the pay they take home. But the opposite is true. In 2018, Oregon drivers earned $1.85 per mile and 15 cents per minute. Today, that’s fallen to 70 cents per mile and 24 cents per minute, a 47% pay cut on a typical trip. What’s more, this mammoth attack on driver pay is now being overtaken by an even more calculated attack on driver pay: algorithmic pay discrimination, or “up-front pay”.

Oregon rideshare driver demands: Fair pay now! No driver should be earning less than minimum wage after deducting the cost of operating their vehicle. Protection from unfair deactivation, the industry term for termination, with clear appeal rights, and representation from a worker led organization to ensure that every driver is able to meaningfully access this right. Access to the benefits that all workers deserve. This means meaningful driver inclusion in the public workplace protections and benefits that most Oregon workers take for granted, such as paid sick leave, Paid Family and Medical Leave, Unemployment Insurance, and Workers’ Compensation.

Recently, a Drivers Union Oregon coalition showed up at a Northeast Portland Boeing facility to stand in solidarity with the Boeing workers who are striking for the pay and benefits that deserve. This is a fight shared by all workers, whether they work in a factory or sit behind the wheel of their car as a rideshare driver. Oregon drivers have seen their pay fall year after year even as robust inflation has stretched their earnings more with every month. Likewise, Boeing workers have seen their pay stagnate despite rising medical costs and an ever increasing cost of living, and have been subjected to mandatory overtime, keeping them away from their families and the rest that all workers deserve. Unions brought us the weekend, and we stand with IAM 751 and the workers at Boeing who have every right to theirs.
